Why Meditate?

It’s boring. I don’t have time. I can’t sit still. I can’t stop my thoughts and chatter in my mind. Excuses, excuses, these are actually mine, not yours, you may have different ones.

I’ll let you in on a little secret…I find meditation one of the hardest practices of Yoga. When I was learning to teach meditation, I actually pressed fast forward on the ones I was meant to be analyzing, so I could get it over with. That’s how my brain works, on fast forward.

Meditation is the method in which we can silence the mind, silence what Buddha calls the ‘drunken monkeys running around in our minds’.

When the mind is still, concentration is increased and we can experience an inner peace that is delicious. This is why we meditate, to have some calm in this hectic world that we live in.

What can we benefit from Meditating?

I tried explaining this to my kids the other day, when I get to a certain spot in my meditation practice, it feels as though I am just about to fall asleep, that blissful feeling of not being able to feel my physical body, any aches and pains are gone, I can hear things, but I’m not really concentrating on anything, I feel as though I’m lying on a cloud floating. That’s my kid version, a friend of mine explains it to adults as the feeling of having an orgasm, not a care in the world, complete bliss…

Here’s some more;

  1. Improved concentration – A clear mind makes you more productive in every area of your life.
  2. Less bothered by little things – have you read ‘Don’t sweat the small stuff’? It is natural for the mind to magnify small things into serious problems. Meditation helps us detach from these thoughts. We learn to live in the here and now, rather than worrying about the past or future. We do not worry about meaningless things, but see the bigger picture.
  3. Better Health – There have been numerous studies pointing to the health benefits of meditation. The reason is that meditation reduces stress levels and alleviates anxiety. If we can reduce stress, many health benefits follow.
  4. Knowledge of Self – Meditation enables us to have a deeper understanding of our inner self. Through meditation we can gain a better understanding of our life’s purpose.

Don’t have time to meditate?

Do you have time to be sick from life and work?

Do you have time to loose pay, pay health care bills and feel like shit?

I teach people to meditate for very short periods of time and only using the breath as guidance. Firstly, when you start with a short meditation, you can get used to it and build up, instead of starting with a longer one and hating the practice. Secondly, I teach you to use your breath, as this is always with you. You don’t need an App, and when you’ve practiced enough times with me, then you can remember the sequences and breathing techniques and do it anywhere, any time. In my membership classes I have been teaching them quite a few different techniques, so they can choose which one they like.

Like anything worthwhile, meditation requires practice. To get the most from meditation you need to do it every day. This requires a place and time where you will not be disturbed, I like to do it in the car as I’m waiting to pick my kids up from school.

Which meditation is best for you?

 

You know how good meditation is for you so you go to a class and they start chanting. WTF right? Isn’t meditation meant to be calming and quiet? Well, yes, but that depends on which type of meditation you want to do.

Here’s your quick guide to the most popular ones, there are more, let me know in the comments below which ones you LOVE or if you want to find out about more, I’m always happy to help.

Guided mediation

This is where a person guides you through a relaxation using mental imagery and spoken word. I love to teach this at the end of my Yoga sessions and as longer sessions by themselves. Peeps tell me that they love just listening to my voice to help allow their minds to be directed. This type of meditation gives you a deep sense of relaxation and can be used to help overcome anxiety and fears. It has had enormous benefits for soldiers coming back from wars suffering from post-traumatic stress syndrome.

Mindful meditation

I’m actually starting a 5 week course on this today; I’m super excited about it. Mindfulness is a bit of a buzz word at the moment. It’s meditation focussing on the breath and learning how to detach yourself from your thoughts. I find this enormously helpful to relax and get to sleep, especially if I have a problem and it’s just keeps going around and around in my head.

This meditation is a great way of creating self-acceptance and long lasting happiness.

 

Mantra meditation

A Mantra is a word or a series of words. They are repeated over and over to allow the mind to focus. If my mind is really busy, I find this really useful, used with a breathing meditation to chill. This is said to reduce anxiety and depression and is very soothing; think chanting monks or prayer.

 

Kundalini Meditation

I was a little wary of this one, as we can be of something we don’t know too much about, so I decided I needed to know more to have an informed opinion of it. I did a few classes and really enjoyed them. Kundalini meditation is a combination of Mantra, Mudra (Yogic hand positions) and quick breathing techniques and sometimes movement.

Breathing Meditation

This is my standard way of calming my mind. In Yoga we call the breath, Prana and controlling the breath is Pranayama. Meditation with the breath keeps you in the present moment and you always have your breath, so you can meditate anywhere. I love it. It creates a calm mind and a peaceful attitude. It allows the oxygen to flow freely through-out your body, allowing it to feel refreshed and alert.
